Lead Furniture Designer & Product Development Manager<br>Company: Umbra Egypt Location:New Cairo, Egypt Employment Type:Full-Time Salary:EGP 40,000–60,000 gross per month, based on experience, portfolio, and technical capabilities<br>About Umbra<br>Umbra Egypt is an outdoor-living company specializing in pergolas, outdoor furniture, and customized exterior solutions.<br>As part of our next stage of growth, we are establishing a dedicated furniture-design and product-development function to create original outdoor furniture collections under the Umbra brand.<br>We are looking for a highly experienced **Lead Furniture Designer & Product Development Manager** who can independently lead the complete development of new furniture collections from initial concept through prototyping, technical development, and final production.<br>Role Overview<br>This is a senior standalone role.<br>The selected candidate will initially work independently without an existing furniture-design team and will be responsible for building Umbra’s furniture-design and product-development process from the ground up.<br>The role requires a combination of creativity, technical expertise, manufacturing knowledge, upholstery experience, and strong commercial understanding.<br>The ideal candidate must be capable of developing complete furniture products—not only visual concepts—including the structure, frame, upholstery, cushions, materials, hardware, finishes, technical details, and manufacturing documentation.<br>Key Responsibilities<br>* Lead the development of complete outdoor furniture collections from concept through final production.* Design products including sofas, lounge chairs, dining chairs, tables, loungers, daybeds, benches, stools, ottomans, modular seating, and outdoor accessories.* Establish Umbra’s furniture-design standards, product-development workflow, technical documentation, and collection-development process.* Conduct market, competitor, material, lifestyle, and furniture-trend research.* Develop original design concepts aligned with Umbra’s brand identity and commercial direction.* Prepare mood boards, concept sketches, design presentations, material palettes, and collection proposals.* Create detailed 3D models, technical drawings, sections, dimensions, assembly details, and production specifications.* Develop complete furniture designs covering frames, structures, joinery, upholstery, cushions, support systems, materials, hardware, and finishes.* Design furniture using wood, aluminum, steel, rope, outdoor fabrics, foam, glass, stone, and mixed materials.* Ensure products are ergonomic, comfortable, visually balanced, durable, and suitable for outdoor environments.* Design products according to available production capabilities, machinery, materials, target costs, and expected production quantities.* Work directly with carpenters, metalworkers, upholsterers, engineers, purchasing teams, suppliers, and production teams.* Lead the prototype and sampling process from initial trial through final product approval.* Review prototypes and identify technical, aesthetic, comfort, durability, and manufacturing issues.* Provide practical design corrections and resolve production challenges.* Prepare complete production-ready documentation for all approved products.* Define product dimensions, materials, finishes, foam specifications, fabric requirements, hardware, and assembly methods.* Support the preparation of bills of materials and product-costing information.* Apply value engineering to reduce unnecessary complexity, production time, waste, and material costs.* Ensure consistency across complete collections, including proportions, materials, colors, finishes, and design language.* Coordinate material samples, fabric selections, colors, hardware, and finish approvals.* Prepare product information required for catalogues, product photography, marketing materials, and collection launches.* Develop a long-term product roadmap for Umbra’s furniture collections.* Support the future recruitment, development, and management of a furniture-design team as the department grows.<br>Upholstery Responsibilities<br>The candidate must have strong practical knowledge of upholstered furniture design and construction.<br>Responsibilities include:<br>* Designing complete upholstered products, including internal frames, support systems, cushions, covers, and finishing details.* Specifying appropriate foam densities, foam layers, cushion construction, and comfort requirements.* Understanding suspension systems, webbing, straps, springs, and other seating-support methods.* Preparing detailed cushion drawings, upholstery sections, cutting dimensions, and assembly requirements.* Selecting suitable indoor and outdoor fabrics based on performance, durability, UV resistance, moisture resistance, and cleanability.* Calculating and optimizing fabric consumption.* Developing stitching details, piping, seams, zippers, removable covers, and upholstery finishes.* Working directly with upholsterers during prototype development and production.* Evaluating comfort, proportions, support, appearance, and long-term performance.* Ensuring outdoor cushions and upholstery are designed for drainage, drying, maintenance, and weather exposure.<br>Required Qualifications<br>* Bachelor’s degree in Furniture Design, Industrial Design, Product Design, Applied Arts, Interior Design, or a related field.* Minimum **8 years of professional experience** in furniture design and product development.* Preferably **10–15 years of experience**, including responsibility for complete furniture collections.* Proven experience independently developing furniture from initial concept through prototyping, technical development, manufacturing, and final production.* Strong portfolio showing original furniture collections that were successfully manufactured and launched.* Extensive knowledge of furniture construction, joinery, structural systems, ergonomics, proportions, materials, finishes, and manufacturing methods.* Strong practical knowledge of upholstery construction and upholstered furniture design.* Experience designing complete products, including frames, structures, cushions, upholstery, hardware, finishes, and production details.* Strong experience working with wood, aluminum, steel, upholstery, rope, outdoor fabrics, foam, and mixed materials.* Advanced proficiency in Auto CAD and relevant 3D-design software such as Rhino, Solid Works, 3ds Max, Sketch Up, or equivalent.* Ability to prepare accurate manufacturing drawings, upholstery details, technical specifications, bills of materials, and production documentation.* Strong understanding of outdoor furniture requirements, including weather resistance, drainage, UV exposure, corrosion protection, fabric performance, and long-term durability.* Proven ability to supervise prototypes, solve manufacturing issues, and work directly with factory teams.* Strong understanding of product costing, material optimization, value engineering, and design for manufacturing.* Ability to manage several products, prototypes, and collection-development projects simultaneously.* Ability to work independently and take full ownership of the furniture-development function.* Strong communication, presentation, planning, and problem-solving skills.<br>Preferred Experience<br>* Previous experience as a Lead Furniture Designer, Senior Furniture Designer, Design Manager, Product Development Manager, or similar role.* Experience developing complete outdoor furniture collections.* Experience working directly inside a furniture factory or manufacturing environment.* Experience creating furniture for residential, hospitality, retail, or export markets.* Experience developing commercially successful products, not only concepts or visual presentations.* Experience establishing a design or product-development department from the ground up.* Experience with production costing, supplier development, material sourcing, and quality control.* Experience mentoring designers or building a future design
