Reports to: Manager, Cataloging and Metadata
Purpose: The job holder will ensure the accurate description and discoverability of the University’s academic resources by using the new Metadata technologies to generate a high-quality bibliographic metadata for the variant of scholarly resources within the Library Management System (LMS) and any other emerging systems. He or She will be responsible for the copy or original cataloging of library materials in English, Arabic, and other languages and all formats, both physical and digital, while strictly adhering to international metadata standards. The role will conduct original cataloging under the supervision of a cataloging and Metadata manager, being part of the transformation strategy of the library to incorporate the AI technologies with the daily workflow.
Responsibilities:Metadata Creation and Enhancement for Digital and Physical Assets: Perform copy cataloging for materials in all formats, in particular print Arabic scholarly resources Create, enrich, and maintain descriptive, administrative, and technical metadata to ensure seamless discoverability of all resources via the Library Management System Descriptive Cataloging and Classification:Perform original and copy cataloging for library materials in various formats, print or digital, examining items to create accurate bibliographic descriptions Apply complex international standards including Resource Description and Access (RDA), Machine-Readable Cataloging (MARC 21), and Library of Congress Classification to classify materials Create and maintain name, subject, uniform title, and series authority records to ensure consistency in the library catalog Quality Control and Database Maintenance: Enter and verify bibliographic data in the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) World Cat and Sierra integrated library systems Conduct ongoing maintenance of bibliographic and holdings records to correct errors and reflect collection changes Stay updated on cataloging trends to ensure the library's metadata practices remain current especially with the AI techniques and applications Collaboration and Training: Actively participate in metadata events when possible and act as trainers for sessions provided by the cataloguing unit under the Libraries and Learning Technologies (LLT) Additional Related Duties: Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements:Minimum Education Requirements:Bachelor’s degree in library and information science, digital humanities, or a related field is required Master’s degree is strongly preferred
Experience:Seven to nine years of experience in metadata and cataloging, with at least two years focused on digital collections or digitization projects
Skills:Cataloging and Metadata: Advanced knowledge of RDA, MARC 21, LCC and LSCHSystems and Tools: Experience with OCLC Connexion, integrated library systems, i.e. Sierra, and basic spreadsheet or database tools, and experience with BIBFRAME is an advantage Original Cataloger: completed internal training on original cataloging and developed some level of self-sufficiency Language: Full professional proficiency in English and Arabic Familiarity for metadata purposes in French or German is beneficial Analytical and Project Skills: Strong problem‑solving skills, project coordination ability, and experience in workflow design and documentation Strategic Contribution: Ability to contribute to metadata policy development and to train or guide others in best practices for digital metadata AI tools: The ability to deal with the AI tools or languages in creating Metadata and descriptive cataloging is an advantage
