Reports to:Senior Director, Financial Planning and Analysis
Purpose: Under the supervision of the Senior Director, Financial Planning and Analysis, the job holder will be responsible for data preparation, reporting and analyzing The American University in Cairo’s (AUC) financial statements, and conducting in-depth variance analysis of actuals versus budget and forecast. He or She will also be assisting the financial planning and analysis (FP and A) senior director in supporting decision makers and budget owners in developing their budgets and forecasts, and analyzing budget performance.
Principal Accountabilities:
- Support FP and A senior director in leading the long and short-range budgeting and analysis of the financial activities of the different units of AUC
- Develop a deep understanding of AUC’s financial model, funding models and revenue and expense drivers
- Develop a thorough understanding of the University’s finance policies and practices
- Extract and prepare financial data on a monthly, quarterly, or annual basis
- Financial reporting of actual results versus budget, forecast, previous year, and previous comparative periods
- Develop and execute dashboards that highlight monthly, quarterly, and annual financial performance
- Provide in-depth analyses for key components of AUC budget as well as for the performance of fund centers and projects
- Participate in the budget planning process and ensure its timely implementation and alignment of different departments to the process
- Manage the budget throughout the year by ensuring the alignment of different departments to their budgets while identifying problems and reporting to FP and A senior director for taking corrective actions: Budget management includes coordinating monthly, quarterly, annual, and ad-hoc financial reviews with departments and schools based on the monthly performance highlights
- Manage the process of creating, updating, and communicating AUC financial policies to ensure proper dissemination to relevant stakeholders.
- Provide guidance to AUC personnel with respect to rules and regulations and accounting and financial reporting requirements
- Manage the use and maintenance of data on business planning and consolidation tool (BPC), and act as the main administrator for the system
- Develop and provide training on the budgeting process and the procedures of a budget cycle
- Develop annual user guide or manual to guide users throughout the budget process on the different steps and procedures and to facilitate the budgeting cycle
- Perform other related duties as requested from direct supervisor
Requirements:
Minimum education requirement:
University Degree in business administration, economics or accounting
Experience:
- Minimum of 12 years professional experience, preferably with a strong working knowledge of accounting and financial principles, and the ability to develop and analyze financial information at an institution of higher education
- Strong financial analysis expertise
Skills:
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills and proficient use of other MS Office tools. Other systems’ knowledge is a plus, e.g. Systems Applications and Products (SAP)
- Strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills
- Detail orientation, accuracy, and ability to handle large sets of data
- Solid knowledge of accounting and finance theories
- Ability to interpret financial statements and prepare complex analyses
- Strong inter-personal and communication skills in dealing with people of varying levels in the organization
- Flexibility and a desire to learn
