OBSTETRICIAN GYANECOLOGIST

Médecins Sans Frontièrès (MSF – Doctors without Borders) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare. MSF offers assistance to people based on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. MSF is therefore guided by the principles of neutrality and impartiality. These principles must apply to all MSF staff.

 

Main Purpose
 

Implement gynecological and obstetrician procedures (when required), performing any other prior treatment required, during or immediately after a woman has given birth in order to improve women’s reproductive health and to reduce pregnancy, delivery and neonatology risks. This will be done in accordance with MSF policies, protocols and universal hygiene standards and in multidisciplinary collaboration with other medical doctors and midwife services,

 

 

Accountabilities
 
  • Provide health care related to gynecology and obstetrics to patients, including prevention, diagnosis and treatment. 
  • Ensure the implementation of MSF clinical policies, tools, guidelines and protocols related to gynecology and obstetrics in order to minimize clinical risk and to extend best reproductive practices. 
  • In collaboration with other medical colleagues, carry out the collection of quantitative gynecological data and ensure exhaustive use of management tools in order to improve gynecological results and to share knowledge among other field specialists. 
  • Plan and supervise the HR associated processes (recruitment, training, performance evaluation, development and internal/external communication) of the gynecological staff in order to ensure both an efficient sizing and the amount of knowledge required, to improve people’s capabilities and their active participation in influencing the targeted population using preventive practices. This will be done in close coordination with the HR department. 
  • Supervise the maintenance and running of the gynecological equipment and drug consumption, preparing new orders when required and ensuring its rational use as well as that pharmacy stock levels are permanently updated and available. This will be done in cooperation with the pharmacist and logistic staff, the management

 

MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

The MSF project in Cairo is currently focusing on migrants, refugees and asylum seekers. The project is running an outpatient clinic that specializes in Sexual and reproductive health, Mental health and orthopedic and rehabilitation services, and offers a comprehensive package of care. This comprehensive package of care includes medical care, psychological care, social support (referrals) and physiotherapy. Each patient has an individualized treatment plan implemented by an inter-disciplinary team (IDT).

 

This project is not a typical MSF project (with ready-to-use tools) and requires a lot of flexibility, open-mindedness and capacity to adapt. This project focuses on migrants and refugees; therefore, a strong cultural sensitivity is required.

  • Treat all the patients with the maximum respect, independently from race, origin, religious or political belonging, acknowledging that any abuse of authority or power will not be tolerated.
  • Actively participates in the care and attention, documentation and certification of SV victims and carry out the Sexual Reproductive Health care including ANC/PNC, Family Planning and others.
  • Be able to work in the clinic in a collegial way, as part of a team with other medical and non-medical staff, as well with supervisors and expatriate team, to ensure a more efficient patient workflow. Given that the clinic is structured around Inter-Disciplinary-Team approach, collaboration is mandatory between the medical, physiotherapy, mental health, intercultural mediation and social work disciplines.       
  • Apply medical knowledge and skills to examine, assess, diagnose, and treat outpatient consultations, prescribing the necessary treatment respecting the MSF protocols. Be part and take the responsibility of all patient flow points: Intake process, new assessments, follow up, internal referrals, emergency cases
  • Keep the patient and/or his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanations about the treatment to follow, and make sure that they have fully understood the dosage and special instructions
  • Refer patients to appropriate areas of specialties in medicine if needed
  • In coordination with the Medical Supervisor, follow up on patients who are admitted to our referral hospitals and non-contracted facilities if they require admissions like surgery, communicate with the attending physician regarding the patients case and try to have discharge prescriptions that are under MSF standard list.
  • Be part of ongoing training of the medical multidisciplinary team in order to optimize the quality of care, as well as participate in training sessions that will update medical knowledge and skills to be better equipped in managing specialized cases.
  • Know and ensure that all MSF protocols are followed and implemented, checking universal precautions are followed at all times and reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control.
  • Willing to participate and present case studies in the clinic on a regular basis to share medical knowledge and to analyze data to improve patient care and quality control
  • Follow MSF clinical guidelines and prescribe medication according to the approved MSF standard list.
  • Follow all MSF protocol on documenting all medical cases, making sure all appropriate documents are filled up correctly; follow and be responsible for the file’s closure
  • Always guarantee the patient-doctor confidentiality
  • Collaborate with the nursing staff professionally in providing medical care to all patients
  • Participate actively in medical and interdepartmental meetings.
  • Flexibility and capacity to adapt are needed; given the focus of the clinic, a strong cultural sensitivity is required, as well as respect and willingness to work comprehensively for the care of the patient.
