Software Project Manager

  • Project Planning and Scheduling: use knowledge of project planning techniques, tools like Gantt charts, critical path method (CPM), and Program Evaluation Review Technique (PERT).
  • Budgeting and Financial Management: create and manage a project budget, perform cost estimation, and control costs throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Risk Management: Skills in identifying, analyzing, and mitigating risks, as well as contingency planning.
  • Quality Management: Understanding of quality standards relevant to the project and how to implement quality assurance and control measures.
  • Resource Management: Proficiency in allocating and managing resources, including team members, materials, and equipment.
  • Agile Methodologies: Knowledge of Agile principles and frameworks such as Scrum, Kanban, or Lean, especially if working in software development or IT.
  • Software Proficiency: Familiarity with project management software (like Microsoft Project, Asana, JIRA, Trello, or Basecamp) and related tools (such as Microsoft Excel, Visio, or collaboration platforms like Slack or Microsoft Teams).
  • Change Management: Ability to manage changes to the project scope, schedule, and costs, and understanding the processes for change control.
  • Contract Management and Procurement: Understanding of how to manage contracts, vendor relationships, and procurement processes.
  • Documentation: Skills in creating clear and concise project documents, including project plans, business cases, status reports, and post-project evaluation reports.
  • Technical Writing: Ability to produce well-written project documentation, proposals, and user manuals if necessary.
  • Business Analysis: Competency in understanding business needs and translating them into project requirements and deliverables.
  • Systems Analysis: For IT project managers, understanding of systems analysis and requirements for software development.
  • Compliance and Regulatory Knowledge: Awareness of any industry-specific regulations and ensuring that the project complies with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Ability to analyze project data and metrics to track progress, forecast outcomes, and generate reports for stakeholders.
  • Technical Domain Expertise: Depending on the industry, a deep understanding of specific technologies, engineering principles, or scientific knowledge may be required.
  • Communication Technologies: Proficiency with communication tools, including video conferencing software, email, and instant messaging platforms.

Education: bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, Communication, Business Administration, Systems, or a field relevant to the specific area of expertise. One or more of the following certificates:Project Management Professional (PMP), Certified associate in project management (CAPM), PRINCE2 Foundation/Practitioner, Master Project Manager (MPM), Agile Certified Practitioner (PMI-ACP), Certified ScrumMaster (CSM), Scrum.org Certifications, International Project Management Association (IPMA), Certified Project Director (CPD), Certified Project Management Practitioner (CPMP), Program Management Professional (PgMP), Portfolio Management Professional (PfMP), Certified Six Sigma Green Belt/Black Belt, Professional in Project Management (PPM), Associate in Project Management (APM)
