Open Pit Mining Engineer

Anglo Gold Ashanti acquired the Sukari gold mine in Egypt through the acquisition of Centamin plc in November 2024. Sukari is owned in partnership with the Egyptian Government.

Sukari is located approximately 750km from Cairo and 25km from Marsa Alam on the Red Sea. First gold was poured in June 2009 and commercial production began in April 2010, making Sukari the first modern gold mine in Egypt, a country which in ancient times was a prolific producer of the precious metal. Sukari conducts both open-pit and underground mining operations, each employing specialised mining methods tailored to the orebody characteristics and operational requirements.

The Role

An Open Pit Mining Engineer is responsible for the short-, medium-, or long-term design, scheduling, and safe execution of mineral extraction from surface mines. The role bridges the gap between geological data and live operations to maximize production while minimizing costs and maintaining safety standards.

The Key Responsibilities

Creating pit phases, waste dump layouts, haul road geometries, and pushback strategies using specialized 3D mining software. Translating high-level life-of-mine strategies into actionable daily, weekly, or monthly targets for ore and waste movement. Overseeing drilling, blasting, and fleet optimization (truck and shovel, draglines) in close collaboration with the on-site operations team. Tracking actual tonnage, grade, and equipment hours against the original plan to perform variance analysis and find root causes for delays. Designing stable mine walls, evaluating geotechnical risks (like rockfall or wall slippage), and ensuring strict compliance with local environmental permits.
The Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in mining or Geology engineering. Valid driver's license.2 to 5+ years working directly on an active surface/open pit mine. Hands-on familiarity with drilling, blasting, and truck-and-shovel operations. Proficiency in 3D mining software (such as Deswik, Vulcan, Surpac, or Micromine). Experience in creating pit designs, dump layouts, and haul road paths. Ability to build short-term or medium-term production schedules.
