Roles & Responsibilities

Main responsibilities

  • Management
  1. Team leadership: Supervising, training, and guiding the team of technicians and engineers.
  2. Safety and compliance: Ensuring strict adherence to safety protocols and all relevant industry regulations (e.g., NERC, OSHA, Scatec s ORHVS).
  3. Project coordination: Working with substation manager and Plant manager on substation upgrades and the installation of new equipment.
  4. Asset management: Managing asset-related activities, including selecting new equipment, standardizing assets, and tracking their service life.
  5. Troubleshooting and repair management: Leading the response to equipment failures to minimize downtime and restore service.
  • Commissioning & Testing
  1. Execute commissioning activities for HV equipment including protection relays, transformers, and switchgear.
  2. Perform pre-commissioning and functional testing (secondary injection, primary injection).
  3. Validate protection schemes such as differential, distance, and overcurrent protection.
  4. Ensure systems are compliant before energization.
  • Protection System Management
  1. Configure and maintain protection relays and schemes.
  2. Conduct relay coordination and settings review.
  3. Ensure selectivity and reliability of protection systems.
  4. Update protection settings based on system modifications.
  • Operation & Maintenance Support
  1. Support preventive and corrective maintenance for protection and control systems
  2. Troubleshoot faults and identify root causes.
  3. Maintain proper operation of interlocks and trip circuits.
  • Fault Analysis & Reporting
  1. Investigate system faults and disturbances.
  2. Analyze event logs and relay records.
  3. Prepare reports and recommend improvements.
  • SCADA & Control Systems
  1. Support SCADA integration and signal verification.
  2. Validate alarms, signals, and communication systems.

Qualifications and competencies

Desired Candidate Profile

strong>Educational Background & Experience/strong>

  • A Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, or a closely related field is typically required.
  • Minimum of 7 10 years of progressive experience in high-voltage electrical equipments and protection relays, with at least 3 5 years in a supervisory or management capacity.

strong>Technical Competencies:/strong>

  • strong>Power Systems Expertise:/strong> Comprehensive understanding of electrical infrastructure, including HV transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relaying systems, batteries, and control systems.
  • strong>Regulatory Compliance:/strong> In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements and industry standards, including OSHA safety regulations, NERC (North American Electric Reliability Corporation) standards, and relevant national electrical codes.
  • strong>SCADA and Control Systems:/strong> Proficiency in operating and managing Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and various substation automation systems.
  • strong>Technical Interpretation:/strong> Ability to proficiently read, interpret, and work with engineering drawings, schematics, protection diagrams, and technical equipment manuals.
  • strong>Testing and Commissioning:/strong> Knowledge of substation testing protocols, standards and testing equipment , for commissioning new assets and troubleshooting existing ones /li>
  • strong>Safety Protocols:/strong> Expert-level understanding and practical application of safety procedures, including Lockout-Tagout (LOTO), arc flash safety, and confined space entry protocols.
