SOCIAL WORKER

Médecins Sans Frontièrès (MSF – Doctors without Borders) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organization that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare. MSF offers assistance to people based on need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation. MSF is therefore guided by the principles of neutrality and impartiality.   1. Main Purpose
 

Carrying out all activities involving social support to individual patients/survivors and linking them with other relevant support services and communities at large, according to MSF principles and guidelines. Enhancing the target population’s social condition to have an impact on health-related outcomes

 

 

  1. Accountabilities
 
  • Conducting social assessments, identifying the social support needs of patients/survivors, including legal, protection, shelter/housing, financial/vocational, food security, and access to medical and psychosocial support services beyond the project intervention scope.
  •  Supporting the provision of comprehensive care to patients and their families, by actively coordinating their work with the other members of the MSF multidisciplinary team (eg. medical, MHPSS) and linking with multi-sectoral services such as protection, safety, security, legal, justice, education, and livelihood.
  •  Providing direct social support based on social assessments and facilitating referrals to evaluated external re-sources. Provide systematic follow up care regarding attendance of clinical appointments and following up on referrals made to relevant multi-sectoral services aimed at improving the quality of life of patients/survivors.
  •  Participating in the creation and maintenance of any material needed for the activities of social workers, including facilities and equipment in order to ensure continuity.
  •  Mapping and regular updating of formal and informal support services (incl.existing community resources). Assess quality of existing support services, with identification of gaps and advocacy for an improved culturally appropriate social response.
  •  Maintaining records, statistics, files, and reports on all social work activities and follow up care either provided by MSF or other support services. Identifying gaps in the available services and with the team prioritizing and developing plans following the objectives of MSF

 

 

  1. MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities

The MSF project in Giza runs an outpatient clinic that offers a comprehensive package of care. This package includes medical care, psychological care, social support (referrals) and physiotherapy. Each patient has a personalized treatment plan. A strong community component has also been developed and Mental Health services are provided at community level.

  • Establish and carry out the management of social cases according to criteria established by the organization.
  • Identify and assess social emergency cases and other cases according to MSF's scope. Ensure the confidentiality of patients' cases, and all their related information, 
  • Actively refer cases to the appropriate organizations to obtain necessary services according to previously validated agreements and mappings.
  • Ensure and keep updated records, statistical sheets, and files, reporting social activities, in order to prioritize and develop appropriate programs or projects.
  • Take an active role in the organization of any activities that are carried out under the department of social work, linked to medical activities.
  • Work collaboratively with the different teams of the medical, logistics, supplements, or administrative department.
  • Support in the preparation and design of informative material that is identified as necessary and is adapted for the different nationalities with which we work 
  • Support in the development and implementation of support groups (according to the needs of the project) in conjunction with the multidisciplinary MSF team 
  • Support in the identification of institutions or actors that provide social services and are of benefit to the target population of the project, together with the support of their direct responsible 
  • Participate in case discussions together with the multidisciplinary team to improve the processes of comprehensive approach.
  • Demonstrate good communication skills adapted to the beneficiaries' abilities to transmit clear and specific information according to the scope of the project
