University of the People in Arabic

UNHCR counts 18 million persons of concern in the MENA region, which includes refugees, IDPs, and asylum seekers. Higher education is especially key for these vulnerable populations, including refugees seeking to integrate into host countries, and for Syrians, Iraqis, Yemenis, and Libyans everywhere to be able one day to rebuild their homeland. For instance, as a result of the conflict in Syria alone, over 200,000 university-qualified refugees and displaced persons are left with virtually no recourse to pursue higher education (Institute of International Education, 2016).

UoPeople in Arabic is an ambitious and comprehensive solution to this unique challenge. This not-for-profit University will be open to all students and refugees from the MENA region who wish study toward accredited American degrees, as well as employ refugee scholars who currently are unable to secure teaching positions in their host country. In effect, UoPeople in Arabic would be a University by refugees, for refugees, but would be ultimately open to Arabic speakers everywhere.

University of the People in Arabic will offer undergraduate degrees in Business Administration taught in Arabic to a cohort of Arabic-speaking students, providing those in need with full scholarships to cover the University’s minimal fees.

While there are other opportunities for study in the Arab world, and though many students might prefer to study in traditional/face-to-face environments, only online learning can accommodate the vast numbers who are currently cut off from higher education. With a basically limitless enrollment capacity, UoPeople in Arabic would be the most comprehensive, affordable, scalable, and flexible institution in the region
