Result of Service :Upon completion of service, UN HABITAT will have implemented 4-5 urban events in Cairo that exhibit the complexities of the city. The events will build momentum for the WUF and will provide an opportunity for citizens to engage with the city. UN HABITAT will also implement a number of legacy initiatives that address key challenges for Cairenes. The initiatives will serve as a micro upgrade and as pilot for other areas of the city.

Duties and Responsibilities :Background: UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities. It is the focal point for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. The 12th World Urban Forum, the premier global conference on sustainable urbanization, is taking place in Cairo, Egypt. In an effort to build momentum for the WUF, UN Habitat will be launching an initiative known as Cairo Urban Week, an opportunity for citizens and visitors to engage with the city. Cairo Urban Week will revolve a number of key events that provide unique city experiences. Each event should have a theme such as art and culture, housing, environment, economy etc. Cairo Urban Week will be a joint effort, and the consultant will be responsible for seeking partners with the most relevant experience in each theme. One of the key events should be held with the Grand Egyptian Museum. UN HABITAT is also seeking to implement a number of legacy initiatives for the city. These initiatives will be innovative and will address 1-2 urban challenges that are to be identified by the UN HABITAT team. Reporting Line: The Consultant, Sustainable Urbanization Expert will work under the overall guidance of the Representative (a.i) of Regional Office for Arab States. Duties and responsibilities: The consultant will perform the following duties: Cairo Urban Week • Develop concept note for Cairo Urban Week including identifying 4-5 events to be implemented in the city in advance of the WUF • Create partnerships with relevant stakeholders for the implementation of key events. Partnership with GEM is key. • Finalize all details related to the programming of the events. • Coordinate with UN HABITAT team on promoting events widely. • Manage budget of the implementation of events and fundraise where necessary. Legacy initiatives • Identify 1-2 challenges to be addressed through legacy initiatives. Challenges should be issues that Cairenes struggle with regularly such as lack of open space, accessibility, pollution (air, visual, noise), waste management, etc • Develop interventions to address challenges. Interventions must be innovative, rapidly implementable, scalable, and visible. Strong emphasis on placemaking is encouraged • Develop workplan to implement initiatives with clear roles and responsibilities and timeline. Ensure adequate financing is available. • Document process of implementation. Engage with local community where possible on interventions.
Qualifications/special skills :An advanced university degree (Masters or Equivalent) in communications, public relations, urban development, social sciences or other development related field is required. A first-level university degree in combination with two (2) additional years of qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree. A minimum of five years of progressively responsible work experience in development projects, programme management, advocacy and partnerships, public relations, communications, or related area is required. A good understanding of issues concerning sustainable urban development, with a focus on cross-cutting issues (human rights, gender, youth, climate change) and partnerships is desired. A good knowledge of the socio-political situation of the Arab Region and the respective subregions is preferred. International work experience especially with the United Nations System is an asset.
Languages :Fluency in both oral and written English and Arabic is required. Knowledge of another UN language such as French is an advantage.
