Job Summary
The Mechanical Engineer – Thermal Insulation & Cladding is responsible for the engineering, planning, execution, inspection, and technical supervision of thermal insulation and protective cladding works across heavy industrial projects.
The role covers hot insulation systems for piping, equipment, tanks, vessels, boilers, ducts, and other industrial assets. The engineer will ensure that insulation and cladding works comply with project specifications, approved drawings, applicable standards, quality requirements, safety procedures, budgets, and project schedules.
key Responsibilities
Engineering and Technical Responsibilities:
* Review project specifications, drawings, piping isometrics, equipment layouts, data sheets, insulation schedules, and bills of quantities.* Select appropriate insulation systems based on operating temperature, process conditions, environmental exposure, energy-conservation requirements, and fire and safety considerations.* Prepare and review insulation and cladding specifications, material take-offs, technical submittals, method statements, inspection and test plans, and installation procedures.* Determine the required insulation material, thickness, density, vapor barriers, weatherproofing systems, fastening arrangements, and cladding materials.* Provide technical solutions for hot-service, cold-service, cryogenic, acoustic, anti-condensation, and personnel-protection applications.* Develop insulation details for piping fittings, valves, flanges, supports, vessels, tanks, ducts, boilers, turbines, and other industrial equipment.* Review vendor and subcontractor technical offers and verify compliance with project specifications.* Support cost estimation, tender preparation, quantity verification, variation orders, and technical-commercial evaluations.* Identify insulation interfaces and potential clashes with piping, structural steel, equipment, electrical systems, and instrumentation.
Site Execution and Supervision:
* Plan and supervise insulation and cladding activities at construction and operating industrial sites.* Coordinate daily activities with construction teams, subcontractors, planners, QA/QC personnel, HSE teams, and client representatives.* Ensure that surfaces are properly prepared and released before insulation installation.* Verify the correct installation of insulation materials, vapor barriers, sealants, expansion joints, support systems, removable insulation covers, and metal cladding.* Supervise the fabrication and installation of aluminium, stainless-steel, and galvanized-steel cladding.* Monitor workforce productivity, material consumption, work progress, and subcontractor performance.* Resolve technical and site-related problems and provide practical corrective solutions.* Coordinate insulation activities during plant shutdowns, turnarounds, maintenance campaigns, and time-critical projects.* Ensure that completed systems provide continuous insulation and adequate protection against weather, moisture ingress, mechanical damage, and corrosion under insulation.* Prepare progress reports, look-ahead plans, technical queries, site instructions, and completion documentation.
Quality and Inspection
* Inspect insulation and cladding works in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, method statements, and inspection plans.* Verify material certificates, approved manufacturers, batch information, storage conditions, and material traceability.* Conduct inspections covering insulation thickness, density, joint arrangement, fastening, sealing, vapor-barrier continuity, cladding overlap, water shedding, and workmanship.* Identify non-conformities, recommend corrective actions, and follow up until final closure.* Participate in client inspections, system handovers, punch-list clearance, and final acceptance.* Support investigations and preventive actions related to moisture ingress, insulation deterioration, heat loss, condensation, and corrosion under insulation.* Maintain inspection records, material reports, red-line drawings, and final project dossiers.
Health, Safety, and Environmental Responsibilities
* Ensure all activities comply with project HSE requirements and applicable site procedures.* Conduct or participate in risk assessments, job safety analyses, toolbox talks, and permit-to-work activities.* Promote safe practices for working at height, scaffolding access, confined spaces, hot surfaces, sharp metal cladding, and insulation-material handling.* Ensure the correct use of personal protective equipment and proper housekeeping within work areas.
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university.* Minimum 10 years of relevant experience in thermal insulation and industrial cladding.* Proven experience on heavy industrial projects such as power plants, refineries, petrochemical facilities, oil and gas plants, cement plants, fertilizer plants, steel plants, LNG facilities, or large process-industry projects.* Strong practical knowledge of insulation systems for piping, tanks, vessels, boilers, ducts, turbines, heat exchangers, and industrial equipment.* Demonstrated experience in both engineering review and site execution.* Experience managing insulation subcontractors, supervisors, foremen, technicians, and skilled workers.* Strong understanding of corrosion under insulation and moisture-prevention requirements.* Experience working on shutdowns, plant maintenance, or brownfield projects is highly preferred.* Good command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of Arabic or another project-relevant language is an advantage.
Required Technical Knowledge
The successful candidate should have practical knowledge of:
* Hot insulation systems.* Mineral wool, rock wool, glass wool, calcium silicate, cellular glass, perlite, aerogel, elastomeric foam, PIR, PUR, and ceramic-fibre insulation.* Aluminium, stainless-steel, and galvanized-steel cladding systems.* Vapor barriers, weather barriers, mastics, sealants, membranes, fastening systems, support rings, and expansion joints.* Removable and reusable insulation covers for valves, flanges, turbines, and equipment requiring maintenance access.* Insulation thickness calculations, heat-loss control, surface-temperature control, and condensation prevention.* Material take-offs, quantity surveying, cost estimation, productivity calculations, and project planning.* Reading piping isometrics, general arrangement drawings, P&IDs, equipment drawings, and insulation schedules.* Relevant international standards and industry practices, including ISO, ASTM, BS, EN, CINI, NORSOK, or equivalent project-specific requirements.* Inspection procedures, non-conformance reporting, punch-list management, and project handover requirements.
Software Skills
* Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.* Good working knowledge of Auto CAD.* Ability to review 3D models using Navisworks or similar software is preferred.* Experience with Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project is an advantage.* Familiarity with thermal-insulation calculation or heat-transfer software is preferred.
