Anglo Gold Ashanti acquired the Sukari gold mine in Egypt through the acquisition of Centamin plc in November 2024. Sukari is owned in partnership with the Egyptian Government.
Sukari is located approximately 750km from Cairo and 25km from Marsa Alam on the Red Sea. First gold was poured in June 2009 and commercial production began in April 2010, making Sukari the first modern gold mine in Egypt, a country which in ancient times was a prolific producer of the precious metal. Sukari conducts both open-pit and underground mining operations, each employing specialised mining methods tailored to the orebody characteristics and operational requirements.
The Role
The Welding Leading Hand is responsible for executing both planned and unplanned structural maintenance and welding activities on a shift-by-shift basis safely and effectively. This role plays a key leadership part within the mobile maintenance team, assisting the supervisor, managing workforce execution, and ensuring all results meet strict quality standards, OEM specifications, and company expectations

The Key Responsibilities
Identify Work & Inspect: Carry out detailed structural equipment inspections (including booms, sticks, buckets, and track frames/carbodies) to identify corrective work before it becomes a breakdown. Ensure defects are prioritized according to potential risks to HSE and equipment availability. Lead active shift handovers and translate toolbox talks for the team. Perform & Oversee Work: Ensure all staff work effectively in a safe and efficient manner, guaranteeing strict adherence to safety protocols, site permits, risk assessments, and isolation requirements. Working alone or as part of a team in the open pit or workshop, execute welding tasks and inspect machinery repairs using dye penetrant, ultrasonic, and MPI testing methods to ensure a fit-for-purpose return condition. Record Work & Job Completion: Complete and understand detailed structural reports on PM activities, providing realistic timescales for repairs. Ensure unused GET components or steel are returned to stock, report damaged tooling, and maintain excellent housekeeping and cleanliness standards across all work areas The Requirements
Education & Certifications: National technical qualifications are highly regarded. Focusing search strings on candidates who are formally certified in the 4G welding position is a key criteria for screening. Experience: A minimum of 3–5 years of experience in a relevant welding or heavy structural maintenance environment. Prior gold mining experience is not necessary. Candidates from heavy industries such as Construction or major heavy equipment dealerships like Mantrac are highly targeted. Knowledge & Skills: Strong understanding and hands-on experience with Caterpillar equipment and structural systems. Deep practical knowledge and understanding of welding codes and standards. Proven ability to carry out detailed structural inspections on heavy mining machinery and identify defects using specialized testing methods (dye pen, ultrasonic, MPI). Deep competence in identifying and managing Ground Engaging Tools (GET). Strong team leadership, communication, problem-solving, and risk assessment capabilities. Leadership Scope: Manages a total team of 25 personnel, consisting of 9 SGM permanent staff and 16 contractors. May be required to stand in for the supervisor during times of leave or illness. Selection Process: Candidates must be willing to undergo a practical assessment verifying proficiency with different welding methods, crack identification testing, and the management of Ground Engaging Tools (GET).
